Abstract
Studies of psychiatric disorders among obstetrics and gynecologic patients are not popular topics in both the obstetrics and gynecology and the psychiatric journals today. Through our daily practice, however, it is the recent impression that there are a certain number of patie- nts whose findings are absolutely free from pathology as well as the laboraory results in spite of their serious complaints of tynecological symptoms. Unfortunately, some of those ofter are dealt with as atypical patients and kept under the care of tynecologist for a long time. This report presents the result of psychiatric evaluation of 60 such cases chosen by obstetrician-gynecologists, Cheil hostital, Seoul, Korea, during the period of May 1969 to September 1969. Results. 1) Obvious psychic disorders were found on 58 out of 60 cases and their gynecological symptoms were revealed to be displacement of underlying psychopathology. 2) Depression and personal defect were the mejor diagnosis and there were 3 cases of typical Schizophrenia. 3) 3 to 15 times of psychotherapy, performed by specialist, were required for4 each of 58 cases and among those significant improvement were obtained on 27 cases. In addition to psychotherapy a small doses of antidepressants and tranquilizers were given to majority cases. With the above results, we believe good cooperation between gynecologist and psychiatrician can make not only correct diagnosis and logical or reasonable cares of those cases but also prevent chronicity of the disease and possible misunderstanding of the illness as an uncurable one.
